At West Florida Baptist Church our mission is twofold; Love God and love others. Why? Simple:
In the book of Matthew, chapter 22, Jesus’ disciples asked Him:
“Master, which is the great commandment in the law?”
Jesus replied instantly:
“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first great commandment.”
When God speaks; you listen.
The instruction Christ gave His disciples in this passage is the heartbeat of our ministry. It was God’s love toward us that ransomed us while we were yet sinners. God’s love made it possible for us to have a relationship with Him. Today our love for God is the reason we serve him. Not a love of duty or obligation, but adoration for a God powerful enough to create us and merciful enough to save us. God’s love is what compels us. It unites and comforts us. His love is the reason we live; and the reason we serve.
Loving God requires more than simple affection. Jesus told his disciples throughout his ministry “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” Loving God means we follow the instructions He has provided us in His word.
It doesn’t stop there.
Jesus continued in Matthew, chapter 22 by telling his disciples that the second greatest commandment is:
“Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.”
Jesus made it very clear that second only to loving God was loving others. Every part of our ministry is focused on demonstrating true, Christlike love. Not a love that’s convenient, manufactured or insincere. Not a mutual tolerance with harmony as the only goal. True Christlike love is genuine and proves itself through time and sacrifice. Loving others the way Christ has commanded us means we’ll do anything possible to share the gospel with those people across the street and around the world.
